BEYAZIT MEYDANI
Beyazıt Square (Forum of Theodosius) is among the most important of İstanbul’s political and historical locations. It was built by Emperor Theodosius as the biggest square of the city in the year 393. During those ages it was known as the Forum Tauri (Forum of the Bull), due to the bronze bull heads (bukranion) appearing on the giant-sized triumphal arch which was constructed at the middle of the square. While a few marble blocks and column remains from the triumphal arch have reached today, nothing from the monumental fountain at the north could reach our day.
Beyazıt Square, which is located at the heart of the Historical Peninsula, and at the center of the city’s main transportation axes, is a place, which witnessed many historical events. The historical square, which had political importance during the Ottoman era, has continued its significance during the Republican era, in the cultural area. İstanbul University, which is accepted as one of the best and most established universities of the world, and Beyazıt Mosque, which is the oldest Saladin mosque of İstanbul that preserves its originality, have played important parts in the square’s maintenance of its significance. The square, which also hosts the Beyazıt State Library and the Second-Hand Booksellers Market, is also a road opening towards the Grand Bazaar.
The square, which was named as the Old Palace Square during the Ottoman Era, and whose name was changed for a while to Liberty (Hürriyet) Square), continues today to host domestic and foreign tourists as one of the most important touristic centers of the city.
