SALACAK
Salacak is one of the oldest settlements of Üsküdar, which has embraced different civilizations for centuries. The neighborhood, where the unique Historical Peninsula silhouette can be watched in the most beautiful manner, a feature which distinguishes it in İstanbul, the only city of the world established on two continents, is also the closest neighborhood to Bosphorus’s pearl Maiden’s Tower.
Salacak, which is located between Şemsipaşa and Harem, enjoys a wonderful panorama, particularly during sunsets. The history of the neighborhood, which also hosts a fountain and a mosque procured by Mehmed the Conqueror in memory of his teacher Akşemsettin, is parallel with the history of Üsküdar.
The history of Üslüdar, dubbed by famous poet Yahya Kemal “as the city that witnessed the conquest of İstanbul”, goes back to around one thousand before Christ. In the year 395, the year the Roman Empire was divided into two, the Eastern Roman Empire, in other words the Byzantine era started in Üsküdar.
During the Byzantine era, Üsküdar became an important trade and accommodation center. Üsküdar, which became controlled by the Ottoman Empire during the Orhan I era in 1348, started to develop in an extremely rapid manner after the Conquest of İstanbul. Particularly after the 16th century, it was embellished by hundreds of structures, including mosques, caravanserais, madrasahs and piers.
